One Million Words Asia Literacy Organization

Hong Kong Projects

Hong Kong is the headquarters of the One Million Words Asia Literacy Organization. While we focus our efforts throughout South-East Asia, even in a major developed city such as Hong Kong, there are areas in need. We are currently in the process of working with small village schools on the minor outlying islands of Hong Kong to help provide books for the schools there. These are primarily very rural fishing villages that can only be accessed by boat. The villages are often independent of the Hong Kong SAR, being run by indigenous tribal leaders, and have very little direct contact with the city. Of course, they highly value education, so we are in the process of making that available to them.

We also host and partner with a wide variety of events and fundraising activities in Hong Kong. Below you can see a few of the events we've had.

Single Malt Online Charity Auction

Single Malt Online held a successful charity fundraiser in Hong Kong to raise HKD $18,000 for the One Million Words Asia Literacy Organization to help children and promote education for an orphanage in Tibet.

Single Malt Online (an online whisky retailer based in Hong Kong specializing in single malts), The MacAllan, and Highland Park hosted an exclusive whisky tasting followed by dinner at the China Club for charity on May 14th. All profits and donations went towards the One Million Words organization’s upcoming charity donation in Tibet.

One Million Words Asia Literacy Organization will donate 1,000 Chinese and English textbooks to SenJiMeiDuo (SJMD) Tibetan Charity School, located in Qizhong village, Deqing Prefecture. SJMD caterers to Buddhist children aged 9 to 18 years, from Gansu, Sichuan, Tibet and, Yunnan provinces in China. All the students in SJMD have left or been excluded from mainstream education in Chinese schools due to ethnicity or academic score. In November 2014 over half the school burnt down leaving the students having to undertake classes on the basketball court outside in the open. Since the fire the students have been repairing and rebuilding classrooms and dormitories. The books and resources donated by One Million Words are much needed for continuation of their education. "The children at SenJiMeiDuo have a passion for learning and the desire to seek out a bright future," said Dr. Robert Lockyer, President and CEO of the One Million Words organization. "We are extremely proud and happy to help facilitate their efforts, and we will do more in the future to ensure that they get the education they deserve."
